SCG: Leading Green Innovation and Empowerment

Siam Cement Group (SCG), the 'Organisation of Opportunities,' empowers people and fosters green innovations, aiming for a low-carbon society and sustainable growth.

Siam Cement Group (SCG), known as the Organisation of Opportunities, empowers people, turns ideas into reality, develops world-class innovations, collaborates across sectors, fosters green innovations, and aims for a low-carbon society. We are committed to fostering mutual growth in a low-carbon society, with a good quality of life, economic prosperity, social well-being, and a sustainable environment. We don't leave anyone behind. In 2024, we allocated 10 billion baht to develop low-carbon production processes and green innovations.

Thammasak Sethaudom, President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The Siam Cement Public Company Limited, stated that "Developing green innovations is key to addressing global challenges. We invite all sectors to come together to support the adoption of green innovations that meet the needs. This transformation is not easy because it requires changes in technology, customer and market understanding, as well as new regulations. 'The power of people' is crucial in driving this change."

"SCG has thus created a space to build the 'Organisation of Possibilities,' where everyone, including employees, partners, and all generations, has the opportunity to showcase their potential and unleash limitless passion. Thinking outside the box, experimenting, and learning are encouraged to develop green innovations that meet the needs of customers, society, and the environment, as well as to drive business growth. The SCG Organisation of Opportunities consists of:

  1. Opportunities to turn ideas into innovations: For example, empowering employees to become entrepreneurs through the 'ZERO TO ONE by SCG' startup project within the organisation, equipping them with skills from understanding customers, identifying problems, developing products that meet customer needs, and expanding customer bases for exponential growth. This serves as a tool for business and innovation development, including Design Thinking, Generative AI, and Data Analytics. Currently, there are over 800 participants and 100 startup projects in the program, such as 'Wake Up Waste,' a waste compression platform that reduces waste and improves transportation efficiency, leading to more efficient waste management processes. There is also 'Dezpax,' the first online packaging platform in Thailand for food businesses, food delivery, and cafes. Additionally, the 'SCG Young Talent Program' nurtures new talent from universities of all levels and disciplines through real-world work with SCG in a 13-week boot camp to co-create digital innovations, respond to future trends, with over 850 new participants so far. Furthermore, support is given to employees at all levels to regularly propose ideas, fostering an open-minded culture, promoting continuous learning, and developing new skills without being confined to past successes (Open & Challenge).
  2. Opportunities for global innovation development: Supporting internal research and collaborating with global experts, such as partnering with 'Norner AS,' a plastic research and development centre in Norway, and 'Oxford University,' UK, to develop innovations and technologies for sustainability. Additionally, collaborating with startups from the United States, such as 'Rondo Energy,' to develop advanced Deep Technology that transforms the low-carbon industry, such as batteries that store heat from clean energy.
  3. Opportunities for collaboration across all sectors: Engaging with stakeholders from the public, private, and social sectors to collectively create a sustainable low-carbon society. Initiatives include driving the 'Saraburi Sandbox' to create Thailand's first low-carbon prototype city, leading Thailand towards Net Zero. In 2024, SCG allocated over 10 billion baht to develop low-carbon production processes and green innovations,” he explained.

Mr Thammasak further stated, “The power of the Organisation of Possibilities enables SCG to creatively innovate a variety of green solutions. By designing production processes to reduce carbon dioxide emissions while enhancing functionality to meet the needs of customers, society, and the environment. For instance, we are transforming construction and living spaces into comprehensive green environments, from structural innovations to internal technological systems and decorations. We are constructing homes, buildings, and various projects using 'low-carbon cement and concrete' from 'SCG Cement and Green Solutions', which are environmentally friendly, durable, long-lasting, and meet various global conservation project requirements. These projects range from large-scale construction works, industrial estates, and port projects, to underwater projects, elevating living standards and environmental friendliness. Additionally, 'SCG Smart Living Wing' presents 'all-in-one construction materials' with beautiful designs, durability, and reduced carbon dioxide emissions, certified by SCG Green Choice and Carbon Footprint labels.”

“Moreover, there are energy-efficient technologies such as 'SCG Air Scrubber' for reducing energy consumption in building air conditioning systems, and clean energy production for 24-hour use with 'SCG Solar Hybrid Solutions'. Furthermore, new solutions like 'Microgrid and Energy Storage System' optimise energy management, storing alternative energy from sunlight for various times of the day. Additionally, 'SCG Decor' serves with innovative surface decoration and comprehensive product lines. Recently, the 'COTTO CLAY DECOR COLLECTION' was introduced, offering excellent heat absorption, cooling homes, saving energy, and the 'GEO Series Faucet' innovation, using Non-Foundry Process manufacturing technology, reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by over 10%,” Mr Thammasak explained.

We are raising lifestyle convenience and global sustainability across the entire supply chain, by developing biodegradable plastics under the brand 'SCGC GREEN POLYMERTM', and expanding recycled plastic production capacity in Europe, with 'Sirplaste' in Portugal and 'Kras' in the Netherlands, addressing global green innovation demands. In the regional context, we are collaborating with business partners to make consumer goods greener, such as partnering with HomePro to develop Thailand's first 'Eco-Friendly Appliances', recycling plastics from used appliances. Also, we are collaborating with Braskem to produce 'Bioplastics' or Bio-Polyethylene, changing raw materials from fossil fuels to biodegradable materials, resulting in negative carbon emissions. Furthermore, we are developing innovative green products like medical equipment materials to meet the trend of sustainable health. Moreover, 'SCGC' aims to enhance industrial processes and address challenges through 'REPCO NEX' solutions, delivering Innovative & Digital solutions for sustainability, including Renewable Energy and Smart Manufacturing, reducing resource usage and carbon dioxide emissions.

For businesses aiming to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to zero, 'SCG Cleanergy' acts as a hub, overcoming limitations in industrial clean energy use, accelerating the transition with an intelligent clean energy trading platform 'Smart Grid', and innovative solutions like 'Energy Storage from Clean Energy' replacing fossil fuels for heating or steam in industrial processes. Additionally, 'SCG DoubleUD Logistics' serves as an intermediary connecting low-carbon societies, supporting customers and business partners in reducing Scope 3 carbon emissions through logistics and supply chain services, using technology to efficiently manage environmentally friendly logistics systems, such as the 'Cold Chain Business' employing Automated Storage Retrieval Systems (ASRS) and Solar Roof systems, transforming into energy-saving warehouses, reducing fuel usage and carbon dioxide emissions. Furthermore, other green logistics innovations include 'Electric Transportation', 'AI Route Optimisation', and 'AGV & Robotics', enhancing sustainability and competitiveness for businesses.

“SCG has been at the forefront of green innovation until today, with SCG Green Choice innovation sales accounting for 53% of total sales, targeting 67% by 2030. This is because of everyone's effort. We are ready to support and encourage everyone to shine bright to create a low-carbon society where people enjoy quality lives, economies grow, and societies and environments thrive, with inclusive participation towards Inclusive Green Growth,” Mr Thammasak concluded.
