Innovative material, practical design

Nonchalant Italian elegance is reflected in design of a new store and its products

Mandarina Duck, a well-known Italian brand name for handbags and luggage, recently opened its flagship store on the first floor Atrium Zone of CentralWorld.

The designer is Angelo Micheli, one of the founders of Studio De Lucchi, well known for the simplicity and functionality of its design.

"When I start a project I think: how I can get away with not designing anything, so there's no overlapping or confusion of different lines?" said Angelo Micheli, "This was the case with Mandarina Duck too. When they asked me how I would design the new store, my first thoughts was to not design anything, but just interpret.

"I thought about music and how a composer can produce something magical out of only seven notes. So I didn't design I simply used seven volumes to give shape to the store area. These volumes may look heavy but their material and their composition in space them makes them almost invisible.

"There are also some features to disorientate the visitor but accentuate the product display. Large shiny frames outline the window, reducing the impact of glass and focussing the attention on the products displayed.

Ball, the new feminine line, made from layers of cotton and nylon.

"The items are made of only two materials: white glass and poplar multi-layer board. Small elongated rectangular mirrors joined to some of the display features modify the rigidity of the structures to appear as cuts in the wall. Each store is different - but also the same."

On display at the new flagship store is the latest Spring/Summer collection, Mandarina Duck is continuing the theme of light, practical designs and colours. The new collection highlights the fluid contours and natural look of the materials. Even the most innovative materials are touch-friendly, with an unmistakably hi-tech, glamorous appeal.

Ball is the new feminine line. It is fully reversible thanks to the overlapping of several layers of cotton and nylon - single colour on one side with two zipped pockets, laser designs and two-tone effects on the other. The colours are black, green and light green.

D-Bag is another new line that offers two bags in one: overlapping layers create both a handbag and a shopper. Extremely light, it is made from nylon with an original rubber-edged double window in the centre. Colours are green, brown, yellow, pure white or jet black.

Joy is the newest travel and business line, designed for the woman who loves travelling but always wants to look feminine. The unusual combinations of materials - soft waterproof syntactic fabric which give the feeling of 100 percent cotton with a smooth, soft touch, leather and sparkling metal accessories give this line a distinctive feel. Joy comes in black, natural light brown colours.

Mandarina Duck also introduces Tools, the latest design for laptop bags in a variety of sizes and different colours. The range includes document holders and briefcases. The removable yellow handle, yellow zip pullers, and zips that become trimming are the unusual details. Tools are in grey, red and black. RT
