KATE SPADE AUTUMN 2008 COLLECTION

A moment of true style

Spring Island Evan with Rose.

Kate Spade, the New York-based brand, introduces its autumn 2008 collection of handbags. The savvy film heroines of the 1960s and 1970s set against the backdrop of the Big Apple inspired the collection's tonal richness, sophistication and drama in equal measure.

The luxurious leather groups are offered in a rainbow of fabrics and gem tone palettes. Beresford combines glossy patent leather with ostrich trim in an array of brilliant colourways. Elba brings fine craftsmanship and luxury to some classic silhouettes and new shapes. Knightsbridge, Carnegie Hill, Mirabili and Carnaby Street all add exotic textures and a classic sense of glamour to the season, while Belmont adds a sportier twist to the mix.

For more understated luxury, a range of sleek and tailored styles take shape in vibrant leather tones. Belle Meade features elegant pieced leather detailing in grainy tumbled cowhide, while Highland Park uses embossing on smooth calfskin in an updated version of the classic Tarrytown group.

The season turns fanciful with several more statement-making twists on leather. They include the plushly textured Meribel, constructed in supple shearling; the Glendale evening group in buttery-soft metallic lambskin; Giza, constructed from a rare leopard-printed haircalf that brings to mind the sultry Anne Bancroft of The Graduate; and the pop-inspired printed haircalf of Perry Street Noel, based on a noel pattern blown up to abstraction, which would be completely at home on the shoulder of Ali McGraw's Jennifer in Love Story.

Fabric groups range from the vibrant hues and delicate watercolour patterns of the satin group, Spring Island, to the sporty chic Dellwood in quilted jersey, and the natural pieced Italian wool felt in the tri-tonal Devon tote. The new Classic Noel in bold black and white is a clear tribute to cinematic themes of the season.

Zermatt offers sophisticated slopeside style in quilted nylon, while Northampton mixes its messages with quilted nylon and Italian velvet wide-wale corduroy. Nylon returns in several groups, including Bleeker Street and Sabi Sand.

Drama and theatricality guide the story of colour and texture this autumn. Colourways are rich and varied, including more fashion-forward hues such as mustard, camel, grey, tobacco, emerald, gold, anthracite metallic and rust, as well as other tones making repeat performances, including peony, orange, chocolate, purple and emerald.

The graphic play of black and white makes an assertive appearance, and the floral watercolour pattern of Spring Island and the Perry Street abstract print bring patterning to the fore. A handful of animal prints make a showing as well. RT
