Princess donates art for dog charity auction

CHOMPOO TRAKULLERTSATHIEN

Her Royal Highness Princess Siribha Chudhabhorn presided over the opening ceremony of an art exhibition entitled "My Friends" on June 11 at CentralWorld and also gave two paintings and a stained-glass piece for a charity auction, work that will be displayed along with 56 other artistic works.

After the opening ceremony, the princess discussed the problem of dog abandonment, saying, "It's wrong to dump a dog. Some dog owners keep a dog because it's cute when it's a puppy, but then they abandon it when it grows up. They're just following a fad, like they do with shoes or bags. But in fact, a dog is like a member of the family. Sometimes we forget them, but they never forget us."

The first of the pictures by the princess is entitled Hustler and Fido, an oil painting. Fido is a popular name for dogs since it means fidelity. Hustler is the name of a Hummer, the princess's favourite automobile. She says she loves decorating cars and this brand is her dream car. She cleans and takes care of her car on her own. Hustler is like an intimate friend, exactly like a dog.

The second oil painting is called An Eye for an Eye, A Tooth for a Tooth. It was inspired by the belief that if we want to conquer a fierce animal we have to stare at its eyes. The one who averts his eyes first is the loser. The princess said this picture had no model and came from her own imagination.

Yaovanee Nirandara purchased the picture for 400,000 baht. It will be on display later at Saint Andrew's International School. "Personally, I collect art works. When I saw this picture, I knew it would be my next addition. But this time I will share it with my students in art class. I like the tone of this picture and the princess's talent is fabulous," she said.

Yaovanee said the exhibition would benefit all parties. "Those who buy a picture can make merit and get a high-quality artistic piece. I hope the handicapped animals will also have a better life. Meanwhile, all the art students can exhibit their work. All the pictures and sculptures are magnificent."

The princess's third piece, entitled Phra Chulamanee (a stupa or pagoda containing hair from the Buddha), stems from an ancient Lanna belief that each person has their own personal zodiac, or Phra That, and that those who pay homage to their own Phra That will be fortunate. Phra Chulamanee is a representation of the princess's personal Phra That. This art piece combines several artistic techniques, including stained glass cutting, lacquer and gilding.

Chuthamas Benjarongkakul won the auction for the stained glass picture with a bid of 450,000 baht. She said she was more than willing to donate money to help support handicapped animals.

"The princess has a good heart to do good things for these poor animals. I, as a Thai, would like to partake in this charitable project, too. Normally, I donate money to support dog rescue centres. I'm happy if my donations can provide a better life for handicapped animals," Chuthamas said.

The 'My Friends' exhibition runs until June 30 at CentralWorld, Eden Zone, 3rd Floor.
