Hitachi modular array will help stream video
King Mongkut's University of Technology Thon Buri (KMUTT) has upgraded its storage infrastructure with a scalable Hitachi Data Systems Adaptable Modular Storage array, almost tripling its capacity to enable the hosting of recorded lessons for video streaming.
The Hitachi AMS200 array had been integrated into KMUTT library's storage area network (SAN) for video streaming, according to KMUTT Assistant Professor Dr Bundit Thipakorn, who said it was also a scalable and reliable platform for Microsoft Exchange Server and other business applications, providing tiered storage, consolidation, network attached storage (NAS), backup and data archiving capabilities.
With this purchase, the university's storage capacity had nearly tripled, Dr Bundit said, adding that it gave KMUTT "the capacity to amply support our new interactive learning applications without service interruptions or network slowdowns and played a critical role in helping us achieve our mission of training the next generation of Thai technologists."
Hitachi said that the AMS200 was one of the first co-branded storage systems made available under a joint marketing agreement between Hitachi Data Systems and Acer Computer, which provides services.
Before investing in the Hitachi array, KMUTT had relied on an IBM TotalStorage FAStT500 Storage Server system for much of its digital content. But this had been nearly at capacity and was unable to provide the level of scalability that the KMUTT library required to implement its educational programmes.
KMUTT intends to use the new platform to encourage discussion-based learning rather than more traditional lecture-style education by expanding its interactive offerings with a programme called "Classrooms On-Demand".
This will provide streaming video of lessons so students can replay them for further study, and KMUTT Learning and Information Commons (Klinics) would allow students to interactively discuss their lessons and Classroom On-Demand sessions with other students and faculty members.
After the original broadcast, KMUTT plans to schedule re-broadcasts of each class.
Dr Bundit said the Hitachi AMS200 was easy to install and integrate with the other components of our data centre, "giving KMUTT the capacity to amply support our new interactive learning applications without service interruptions or network slowdowns."
The Hitachi array supports both iSCSI and Fibre Channel connectivity, and scales to more than 39TB of SATA storage, while enhanced SATA data protection helps provide unmatched data availability and resiliency, while RAID 6 facilitates high availability and rapid RAID group rebuild, according to a press statement.
Also included with the AMS200 modular storage was Hitachi's Hi-Track Monitor remote maintenance service tool which allows 24/7 diagnostics to keep potential issues from becoming problems and Hitachi ShadowImage Replication software which provides a non-disruptive, host-independent data replication solution for creating copies of any user accessible data within the AMS200.
