Close to 600 participants worldwide working in pest control services and the food industry will take part in the Pest Summit 2008 from Aug 13-15 in Bangkok.
''The food service business is more concerned with health standards as only one cockroach leg could damage an entire food shop,'' said Suchart Leelayuthyotin, director of the Thailand Pest Management Association and the chairman of the event.
Operators and interested groups will use the event to discuss new technologies to control pests. Participants are coming from 10 countries including the United States, Japan, Norway, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Philippines, Vietnam, and Taiwan.
They will also get a chance to win US$300 in a contest to find the biggest cockroach and termite queen from around the world.
Mr Suchart said that the initial summit would also consider how global warming has changed life cycles of insects and pests, and environmentally friendly methods to destroy the bugs.
''Many people do not know that termites are the biggest contributors of carbon dioxide among living creatures. They eat and pass wind all the time,'' Mr Suchart said.
''The summit will encourage people the world over to use standard pest control operators that offer healthier methods.''
According to Mr Suchart, pest control service has a large presence in the global market and its growth is related to growth in housing estates, industry, hotels and food service.
In Thailand, the value of the industry is estimated at 3.5 billion baht this year, a 10-15% expansion from a year earlier.
There are about 100 Thai companies that received operating licences for pest control from the Food and Drug Administration and more than 400 people, not only service operators but also hoteliers, retailers, and food industry workers that were trained for pest control management.
