Yongyuth's sister to run in by-election in Chiang Rai

Theerawat Khamthita

CHIANG RAI : Yellow-carded La-ong Tiyapairat, the sister of former House Speaker Yongyuth Tiyapairat, has applied to contest a by-election in constituency three.

The registration for candidates for the by-election opened yesterday and runs until Monday, the provincial election office announced.

The by-election will be held on Aug 17. Advance voting will be held on Aug 9 and 10.

Candidates can apply to contest the by-election at the Chom Sawan kindergarten in Ban Bo Kang in Mae Chan district from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

The third constituency covers the areas of Mae Chan, Mae Fa Luang, Mae Sai and Chiang Saen districts.

The Supreme Court's election division ordered a new round of voting in the constituency after the court confirmed a yellow card for Ms La-ong and a red card for her elder brother Mr Yongyuth on the recommendation of the Election Commission.

The poll agency accused Mr Yongyuth, then a People Power party deputy leader, of offering money to kamnans (tambon heads) in Chiang Rai's Mae Chan district in return for helping his sister win the election.

A yellow card means a candidate suspected of cheating can return to a fresh contest while a red card bars the candidate from a by-election and disqualifies him or her from politics from five years.

Ms La-ong was the only candidate to apply on the ticket of the People Power party yesterday.

More than 150 people turned up to show support for her.

Amornpong Wichitakul, the director of the provincial election office, said the by-election may not be as exciting as the last one.

Some observers believe kamnan Chaiwat Changkaokham, a key witness who testified against Mr Yongyuth in the poll case, may run for a rival party.
