Services liberalisation due

Foreigners may soon be eligible to invest more in Thailand's service industries, as the Commerce Ministry is considering opening 27 service business sectors to more liberal foreign investment.

According to Kanissorn Navanugraha, director-general of the Business Development Department, a Chulalongkorn University study commissioned by the Commerce Ministry on opening up these 27 service businesses to foreign investment should be completed over the next couple of months. The service businesses include: engineering management; construction; brokerage or agent businesses; auctions; internal trade in native products or produce not prohibited by law; selling food and beverages; retailing and wholesaling; hotels; advertising; plant cultivation and propagation; computer services; logistics; domestic transport; management businesses for subsidiaries; management consultancy; pawnshops; schools; cinemas; and contracted manufacturing.

Thammasat University has been hired to study which Thai businesses among 20 including hotels, construction and retail, which Thailand is committed to opening up under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) are ready for foreign competition and greater liberalisation.

The Thammasat study is due to be completed early next year.
