Airlines in Asia Pacific, including Thai Airways International, carried 0.6% fewer passengers in July than in the same period last year, confirming that slowing economic growth is having a major impact on travel demand.
The outlook for the rest of the year remains bleak, with most major economies now struggling to avoid recession, said the 17-member Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA).
It said its member airlines carried 12.6 million international passengers in July. However, although this figure was a drop on last July, traffic measured in revenue passenger kilometres (RPK) grew slightly by 0.8%.
International air cargo traffic by AAPA carriers also fell in July, for the second month in a row, with a 5.5% decline in freight carried as measured in freight tonne kilometres (FTKs).However, the average cargo load factor rose marginally to 66.6%, as a result of a 5.9% reduction in flown capacity.
AAPA director-general Andrew Herdman said these figures underscored the fact that the slowing economy is seriously affecting air travel demand, compounded by high oil prices sharply increasing the cost of flying.
