PPP names candidate to run against Apirak for governor

The People Power party (PPP) has chosen the governor of the Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) to run against Apirak Kosayodhin from the Democrat party, who is seeking a second term as governor next month.

The party yesterday decided to nominate Prapas Chongsa-nguan as PPP candidate for the governor's job, Bangkok MP Anupan Nakorndhab announced.

Candidates can register from today. The city elections are on Oct 5.

A Suan Dusit Poll released on Saturday found that only 16% of respondents knew the election will take place next month.

Mr Prapas said he was ready to enter local politics because he wanted to work for Bangkok people.

The MRTA chief said he would accept the nomination only on the condition that no one tries to interfere in his running of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

Mr Anupan said the party would help Mr Prapas pick a team to run with him in the election. The line-up would be finalised tomorrow.
