MANAGING PC CLIENTS
DON SAMBANDARAKSA
Intel has launched the third generation of vPro management technology in the form of its Q45 chipset that extends vPro beyond the firewall and adds new features such as enabling ailing machines to call for help, even when powered down and brings a new virtualisation model to the industry. Speaking in a web conference, Gregory Bryant, vice-president for Intel's digital office platform division said that the key challenges for IT today are security, energy and manageability, all of which is helped by vPro 3, which has many new features aimed at extending manageability outside of the traditional corporate firewall.
With vPro 3, time to patch 1,000 PCs can be reduced by up to 86 per cent with huge savings in power as PCs no longer have to be left powered up for maintenance.
Reducing IT deskside visits can drastically help reduce IT support costs a lot and it can also allow technical support to fix remote or even home PCs and ensure that they are compliant with all security and industry regulations.
VPro 3 also brings to market what Intel calls ''dynamic virtual clients.'' This allows a central server to stream virtualised applications to the client PC for local execution. It can also stream entire operating systems or just a virtual container with OS and application.
This sets it apart from traditional installations and thin client models as data and applications are managed centrally but delivered for local execution. For IT it means that a single image with all the latest patches and security can be maintained rather than hundreds or thousands of desktops scattered across the organisation.
Lenovo has already launched the Lenovo Secure Managed Client for DVC.
The Intel IT Director is a simple and easy to use piece of software to monitor and heal PCs.
For instance, IT can turn off USB ports or run backups. Also part of the vPro 3 launch is a community web site, the vPro expert centre, which Intel hopes to use to help raise the technical expertise level of the IT community through best practices, forums and blogs.
VPro 3 benefits the SMB by bringing managed services to smaller, currently unmanaged IT installations.
Today, companies including Wipro and HCL are providing managed services for this segment.
It brings the concept of Software as a Service even further, and now we have Applications as a Service or even IT as a Service.
