TONY WALTHAM
MakeUseOf is an easy-to-navigate resource with abundant tips on how to get the most out of Web 2.0 with comprehensive lists of recommended web sites, blogs, web-based tools and mobile applications. When I last looked, the opening page included a list of podcasts that geeks should enjoy listening to, a summary of free online management tools plus advice on how to abandon your mouse and click on links with your keyboard.
The founders of MakeUseOf (www.makeuseof.com) are from Denmark and Scotland and it claims to be ''very different from most of the other tech blogs/websites.'' Aibek, one of the founders, says ''we only write about ones that are ccol, free and useful... We also try to keep it simple and all accessible, so that even newbies who never used such sites like Digg and Delicious or ones who think AJAX is a famous washing powder brand can easily find their way around.''
MakeUseOf has a directory section with some 60 categories of web apps listed (and over 30 topics for mobile apps), with many entries for each category: ''Blog tools'' has 50 entries, ''Browser/Browsing tools'' has 40, while ''Music'' lists 86 and there are 111 entries for ''Photos/Images.'' There are also excellent roundups with topics such as ''14 simple things to boost your online productivity'' or ''9 cool Google search shortcuts you should know about.'' The list is long, with more than 280 topics.
The site has a ''latest'' section that has four categories (Blog, Directory, Geeky Fun and Most Popular). There's also a "Top 40" section, listed in order according to the number of views ("100 portable apps for your USB stick" tops the charts). Check out and bookmark this valuable resource.
