STATE RAILWAY

SRT on track to find governor

Amornrat Mahitthirook

Authorities at the Transport Ministry hope to end a dispute over the governorship of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) by returning it to deputy SRT governor Yuthana Thapcharoen, who was selected as the new governor during the Thaksin Shinawatra administration.

The governor's seat has been vacant since Chitsanti Dhanasobhon retired in 2006.

The SRT board then selected Mr Yuthana as his successor.

However, the board did not approve Mr Yuthana's new position right away pending negotiations over his salary. He wanted 350,000 baht a month, but later agreed with the board to cut it to 300,000 baht.

Just before the board could reach a final resolution on the governorship, the Thaksin government was toppled. The new government set up by the military council which staged the 2006 coup replaced the SRT board.

The new board ignored the selection of Mr Yuthana, claiming the position was not open. It restarted the selection process and came up with Bancha Khongnakhon, another deputy SRT governor.

After Mr Bancha was selected for the job, Mr Yuthana asked the Administrative Court to halt his appointment and examine the selection process. The court has yet to make a ruling.

According to a source at the Transport Ministry, the ministry is likely to end the dispute by giving the job to Mr Yuthana. The process involves setting up a committee to consider his complaint against the termination of his appointment and then it will back his selection.

Transport Minister Santi Prompat said he wanted the problem solved as soon as possible as the SRT needed a governor to oversee its operations and problems.
