Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and seven of his cabinet ministers have survived last week's censure debate. But the opposition and public must continue to monitor the work of the government and raise their voice when they come across any suspected wrongdoing on the part of the government.
For their part, members of the Lower and Upper Houses may initiate motions to question the performance of cabinet ministers, or ask for a general debate on matters that affect the country and the people.
One of the issues left unsettled during last week's debate concerns the academic qualifications of Transport Minister Santi Promphat. The opposition claimed that Mr Santi's name had been removed from Ramkhamhaeng University's list of graduates for allegedly letting somebody else sit for an exam on his behalf. Mr Santi vehemently denied the allegation and vowed to resign if the opposition could prove its accusation.
We believe Ramkhamhaeng University can provide relevant information to clear up this matter for the benefit of the public.
If all government MPs are united, it is impossible for the opposition to unseat the prime minister or his cabinet ministers through the censure debate. That is why it is necessary for elected representatives and the public to continue monitoring the government's performance.
