Getting a jump on journalism

BBC World News and the Council of the Mass Communications Faculty Members of Thailand (CMCT) are offering 30 training scholarships to university students who wish to become professional journalists and to enhance Thai journalism in the international arena.

The top two successful applicants will be given the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience through training with professional journalists at world-class news organisations, the BBC World News headquarters in London and the TNN 24 news channel (also known as TrueVisions 07).

The winners of the second prizes will be presented with a training course at the TNN 24 news and given living allowances during the course period.

All the above winners will also have the chance to attend an English course at the British Council to improve their language skills.

This year the examination venues will be located in Bangkok and all regions across the country.

As a special bonus, the best five applicants in each region will join the 10 students recruited from the Bangkok area in participating in a workshop conducted by leading professional journalists.

TrueVisions' corporate communications director Kantima Kunjara, PhD, said, "TrueVisions is committed to be a good corporate citizen by continuing to support Thai society, especially our youths, in education, sports and the arts."

The Future Journalist Award programme - a joint effort by True Visions, BBC World News and the CMCT - is now in its seventh year. This year, the first-round test will be conducted in both Thai and English to attract more candidates.

Dr Kantima added, "There are two first prize awards for a three-week internship at BBC World Headquarters in London, England. The recipients will also earn a training course at News 24 station for one month.

"Thai Airways International will support round-trip Bangkok-London tickets for selected students, who would be granted free accommodation and allowances during the training in Thailand and overseas. The second prizes will be offered to two students for a one-month training course at TNN 24 news channel with allowances during the period.

Terri Seow, head of Marketing, Apac, BBC World News, says: "We are delighted to work with TrueVisions on the Future Journalist Award. I'm delighted that BBC World News will be able to offer the award winners a unique insight into the world's largest broadcast and news-gathering operation. The winner will learn in-depth news production, script writing, shooting and editing, and experience on-site operations with news reporters."

BBC World News is a trusted international news source that offers impartial, in-depth analysis of breaking news and events from around the world, and is watched in more than 200 countries and territories, with a weekly audience of around 78 million viewers.

Most importantly, the candidate must be passionate about a career in news."
