BUILDING MATERIALS

Makeover for wooden homes

Prize of Wood Industry Co, a local manufacturer and distributor of decorative wood products, has expanded to offer a one-stop wooden home building service that can complete a house within five to 15 days. The company is also looking to export its products, having designed a complete set of wooden house components to fit in a single container.

Overwhelming response from visitors to the Architect Fair 2008, which is being held at Impact Muang Thong Thani until tomorrow, has made the company confident of achieving its target of 120 million baht in sales this year, with the possibility of doubling the figure next year.

Its revenue projection is based on sales of ten 40-square-metre units a month at one million to 1.2 million baht each, depending on materials. Its unit prices, excluding transport cost, range between 23,000 and 28,000 baht per sq m, according to managing director Khomwit Boonthamrongkit.

He said the cost of building a concrete house on an island was comparable to that of a wooden unit as the prices of steel and concrete had risen sharply in recent years.

"We need four people to complete a unit in five days while a concrete unit may need several months, causing risk that the contractor might leave the job before completion," says Mr Khomwit.

''However, the advantage of our wooden units is the short period of construction,'' he said.

''We need four people to complete a unit in five days while a concrete unit may need several months, causing risk that the contractor might leave the job before completion.''The company has invested in its own research and development to create an efficient system for building a prefabricated wooden house. Advanced technology also allows the units to withstand typhoon velocities of up to 120 kilometres per hour.

The house structure consists of various layers of walls made of different materials, which can reduce heat, absorb noise and offer durability, as well as being termite-proof.

All joints, pillars and beams are made using seamless German technology while the roof uses advanced heat-treatment technology on farmed teak from the Unites States.

Mr Khomwit said target customers were both residential projects and resorts, especially those in southern Thailand and islands where strong and durable structures are required to be built quickly to save costs.

''This is really a big step forward for us,'' said Mr Khomwit. ''From manufacturing and distribution of wood-related products, we are now able to offer a one-stop, complete homebuilding service, which requires all aspects of knowledge and skills in homebuilding technology.''
