Not far from Hua Hin is a gem of a boutique hotel which first carved out a reputation for itself, some five years ago, as a restaurant. Run by three childhood friends, it has 40 rooms covering an area of a tad over four rai next to a peaceful stretch of beach. The architecture is modern but sensual, with a Zen-like simplicity and sense of aesthetics.
The 20 Studio Pier rooms on the ground floor feature wooden verandahs overlooking a picturesque swimming pool designed to resemble a canal. The 20 Moon Deck suites on the floor above each have a rooftop space where one can sunbathe or watch the sunset and small fishing boats being transformed, as night falls, into mere silhouettes with green lights.
The standard of service here sets the bar for other places to follow and the restaurant is excellent. The management proves that there's more to running a hotel than finding a pretty location and a smart designer.
