Easy to find. Drive through Hua Hin, past Chiva-Som, on to Khao Takieb and then turn left at the first three-way junction you come to (after which the way is well signposted). A tuk-tuk from town costs 150 baht.

The rooms are new and clean. The swimming pool is meticulously maintained.

Attentive and polite service. All 105 members of staff seem to have been well trained by general manager Srayut Ekahitanonda, who is also one of the owners.

Pool, spa and steam room. The Sand Lounge (exclusively for guests) also doubles as a poolside bar. Gift shop, 160-cover restaurant, and guest car park. Nice bathrooms with natural lighting.

Delicious food. Great presentation. Try the deep-fried mackerel fillet with turmeric or the penne crema e fungi pasta dish. Nice wine list. Good beverage selection.

A 24-hour watch is kept on the two points of entry to the hotel: the lobby and the restaurant. Guards salute every time you walk past.

Management claims that waste is not released into the sea and that every effort is made to recycle water. No detergent used (laundry done by an outside contractor).

Not far from Hua Hin is a gem of a boutique hotel which first carved out a reputation for itself, some five years ago, as a restaurant. Run by three childhood friends, it has 40 rooms covering an area of a tad over four rai next to a peaceful stretch of beach. The architecture is modern but sensual, with a Zen-like simplicity and sense of aesthetics.

The 20 Studio Pier rooms on the ground floor feature wooden verandahs overlooking a picturesque swimming pool designed to resemble a canal. The 20 Moon Deck suites on the floor above each have a rooftop space where one can sunbathe or watch the sunset and small fishing boats being transformed, as night falls, into mere silhouettes with green lights.

The standard of service here sets the bar for other places to follow and the restaurant is excellent. The management proves that there's more to running a hotel than finding a pretty location and a smart designer.
