Gambler protected

CRIME / A third-year university student yesterday sought police protection after being harassed by debt collectors aiming to retrieve money he lost gambling on football matches.

Police agreed to send an officer to protect him. Police also said they would charge the debt collectors with extortion and intimidation, and the 21-year-old student will serve as a witness in the case.

The student and relatives filed a complaint with the police Children, Juveniles and Women Division yesterday. Police said he ran up more than 100,000 baht in gambling debts early this year and could not pay them. The debt collectors turned up at the state university he attends and kept calling him. He changed his phone number and had not attended classes for almost six months.

The department earlier ran a campaign saying people need not repay gambling debts and urging victims of intimidation by debt collectors to call police on 02 939 3760-61.

Racers punished

CRIME / The Central Juvenile and Family Court yesterday revoked driving licences and handed suspended 15-day jail terms to 88 young street racers who were rounded up on Rama VI road in February.

They must report to and present their academic records to probation staff, are banned from going to night entertainment spots and must have their urine checked regularly for signs of drug abuse. The judge also ordered each of them to do 48 hours of community service.

The court did not punish 12 other youngsters aged under 15, but their parents must pay the court 5,000 baht for any repeat offence they commit within one year.

A total of 104 youngsters were rounded up for illegal street racing, with 16 modified cars and 150 motorcycles seized. Police pursued different cases for one youth who ran way and three others who denied any involvement.

Jakrapob fights on

CRIME / Former prime minister's office minister Jakrapob Penkair met police investigators yesterday to testify on an alleged lese majeste charge.

Mr Jakrapob took his evidence to police and again vowed to ''fight till the end'' to prove his innocence.

Mr Jakrapob was accused of challenging the royal institution in a speech he gave last year at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Thailand.

The accusation eventually forced him to resign from the ministerial post in late May after police decided to press the lese majeste charge against him.
