INTERNET SECURITY

Heightened awareness of online information security in Thailand has IT specialists cashing in on higher demand. Private companies and government agencies are racing to comply with the Computer Related Crime Act, to be enforced on Aug 23. It requires all state and private organisations to install log management systems to store and monitor computer data to prevent internet crime or face fines of up to 500,000 baht.
Global Technology Integrated Co, a local IT security management firm, is introducing its Security Revolution Analysis Network (SRAN) technology and SRAN security centre system.
Managing director Narat Saraman said the system records and analyses data traffic in compliance with the law, and tracks offenders. Data can be stored for more than two years.
He said the cyber world could be used as a channel for crimes such as data theft and disseminating improper images, or threats to national security.
Symantec Co is another specialist that is capitalising on increasing awareness of online information security and foreseeing strong growth this year.
Alvin Ow, senior director of Symantec for Asia Pacific and Japan, said the new law would spur the security market. He said he awareness was fuelled by a changing business landscape coupled with growing broadband penetration.
Increasing numbers of mobile phones, smart phones, laptop computers and USB devices are also increasing the volume of digital transactions, raising concerns over security risks.
Mr Ow said data security is already highly recognised among organisations in Thailand, and that the kingdom ranks high among developing countries.According to IDC research, he said, the overall security software market in the Asia-Pacific was expected to grow from US$1.114 billion in 2007 to $2.256 billion in 2011. Thailand is expected to grow by 20% in the period.
Mr Ow also said that information security would not only allow users to minimise risk, but also to improve revenue and profits and maximise customer satisfaction.
Symantec provides technical expertise on building and implementing an IT infrastructure across multiple areas.
