True 3G budget

COMMUNICATIONS : True Move has earmarked five billion baht to build its third-generation (3G) mobile broadband network nationwide after its concession provider CAT Telecom agreed to allocate 5 MHz of bandwidth on the 850 MHz frequency.

The country's third-largest mobile operator plans to upgrade the analogue 850 MHz bandwidth to high-speed packet access (HSPA), with a capacity to accommodate up to 1.5 million subscribers.

CEO Suphachai Chearavanont said commercial 3G service should begin by the end of this year.

True Move yesterday opened its first True Move Flagship Shop in Siam Square. The 40-million-baht shop features wireless broadband internet, a coffee shop and fashion outlets.

Lifestyle market

CONSUMER GOODS : Thailand's lifestyle product exports this year are expected to grow by at least 5%, with the value in the first four months up 12.2% year-on-year to US$530.7 million.

Exports are helped by the exposure provided by major trade exhibitions, led by the Bangkok International Gift Fair and Bangkok International Houseware Fair (BIG & BIH).

The next BIG & BIH 2008 will be held from Oct 14-19 at Impact Muang Thong Thani. The first four days are reserved for trade visitors and the public can attend on Oct 18 and 19.

The event is held twice annually, in April and October, to promote locally made gifts, premiums, home decorative items, housewares, toys, stationery and office supplies.
