Changes to varsity admission system

The central university admission scoring system will be altered in 2010 to give the cumulative grade point average (GPAX) and the Ordinary National Educational Test (O-Net) results an equal 50% weighting as the aptitude test. The Council of University Rectors met in Ubon Ratchathani on Saturday to review the weighting for 2010.

The council agreed to increase the weighting for the GPAX and O-Net results for eight core subjects to 50%. Applicants' individual aptitude test in basic subjects, including mathematics, science, engineering and architecture, would make up the rest of the 50% score.

Currently, the inclusion of the O-Net and Advanced National Educational Test (A-Net) scores account for 70% of the university admission criteria, while the grade point average (GPA) and GPAX scores make up the remaining 30%.

The council also agreed that the National Institute of Educational Testing Services (Niets) should be responsible for organising all the future tests.

Also discussed were problems related to the quality of university graduates being produced.

Monthon Sa-nguansermsri, rector of Naresuan University and chair of the council, said a rush by universities to offer courses has affected the quality of university education.

To tackle the problem effectively, universities are now required to employ only specialised instructors when they introduce new courses. Quality of graduates would also be closely monitored and assessed.

Meanwhile, the results of this year's university entrance exams which were announced yesterday saw 79,286 of the 116,324 exam takers passing them.

Kasama Itthisawatpan of Triam Udom Suksa School, who won a seat in Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Engineering, was this year's top scorer with a 91.22% average.

Two visually impaired female students also managed to obtain seats in state universities.

Nonthiya Pasanae was admitted to Rajabhat University Phra Nakhon campus' humanities and social science faculty, while Yodkwan Khuwatcharacharoen got a seat at Burapha University in the same faculty.
