FROZEN SHINAWATRA ASSETS
SOMRUEDI BANCHONGDUANG
The Administrative Court wants more information from Siam Commercial Bank before ruling whether the bank must transfer 12 billion baht from the accounts of two of Thaksin Shinawatra's children to the Revenue Department.
The court yesterday gave the bank three working days to provide the information. SCB director Bodin Asavanich said the demand was unexpected but the bank would comply.
The Revenue Department has demanded the bank hand over 12 billion baht frozen in accounts in the names of Pinthongta and Panthongtae Shinawatra, for a tax liability payment.
The SCB accounts were frozen by order of the Assets Scrutiny Committee (ASC). The case is now with the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC).
The money is a part of the 76 billion baht of Shinawatra family assets which state prosecutors late last month asked the Supreme Court's Criminal Division for Holders of Political Positions to confiscate.
The petition said the cash and assets were unlawfully acquired while Mr Thaksin was in office from 2001-2006 and should be seized by the state.
The SCB said it was bound by the order of the ASC and could not hand over the money to the Revenue Department as demanded.
It asked the Administrative Court to rule on the matter.
The bank has also sent the Revenue Department's written request to the NCCC and the Office of the Attorney-General, seeking guidance.
The SCB has said it will retain the disputed money until the issue is clarified.
