The local contractor Wangdee Engineering and Construction Co has entered the north African market by securing a contract to build housing units worth 1.4 billion baht in the south of Libya.

The company is a subcontractor for 1,612 one-storey rowhouses in Brack, about 700 kilometres south of Libya's capital, Tripoli. Rawas for Constructions and Maintenance Co is the main contractor for the Libyan government's rural area development project, which aims to build 25,000 housing units nationwide.
Ibrahim Jimoh, the co-ordinating consultant for the project, said that Wangdee would set up a joint-venture firm in Libya early next year to handle the Brack job and potential expansion as the company hoped to obtain more subcontracting jobs under the rural development programme in the future.
Wangdee currently has 60 workers carrying out road construction in another city in southern Libya. It earlier finished building another road in the country.
The company expects to hire about 3,000 construction workers, about 2,650 Thais and the rest local and regional labourers, for the next two years.
Wangdee will recruit construction workers, mostly from northeastern and northern Thailand, and send them to the worksite within December.
It is confident it can attract the required number of workers with its attractive salary, a minimum US$420 (14,700 baht) a month tax-free plus free food and accommodation, according to Mr Jimoh.
The company already has experience supplying construction workers to other construction firms overseas but this is the first time it had decided to take on the job as a subcontractor itself.
Mr Jimoh said the construction market in Libya was very competitive but Wangdee won the contract because it had the capability to use its own staff to complete the job.
Established in 1999 with 10 million baht in registered capital, Wangdee Engineering and Construction has gradually established its expertise in both low-rise and high-rise construction, civil construction, various engineering fields, and roads and bridges.
