Two tambons in Chaiyaphum were hit by severe flash floods yesterday after a large weir collapsed in Ban Khwao district.
Torrential rains unleashed mountain run-offs and logs and rocks sweeping down the mountainsides rammed into the weir, which caved in and flooded tambons Phu Laenka and Talad Laeng.
Flood waters inundated farmland and submerged parts of the road linking the province with Nakhon Sawan.
Railings were put up to prevent cars being swept off the road.
The Lam Patao dam speeded up the release of water to ease structural pressure, which worsened the flooding in downtown Chaiyaphum.
In Ayutthaya, a man died trying to save his belongings from the swift-flowing waters in Bang Ban district yesterday.
Jongkon Klinkajon, 67, drowned as he rushed to move his belongings and flee the flood. His cremation has been delayed because the temple is also flooded.
Widespread inundation in Bang Ban district has left some houses under as much as two metres of water.
Residents were camping out on the roads, said permanent secretary for public health Prat Boonyawongwirote.
In Bang Pa-in district, monks relocated precious artefacts from flooded riverside temples.
Phrakru Pisal Panyathorn, abbot of Wat Ban Lensra Krajab in the district, asked Chao Phraya dam officials in upstream Chai Nat province to slow the release into the Chao Phraya river.
Yesterday, the rate of the flow at the mouth of the dam was measured at 2,117 cubic metres a second, up by 147 cu m from the day before.
The province will seek an emergency flood relief budget from the government, as it has already used up the 50 million baht previously granted to the province for disaster assistance, said Ayutthaya disaster prevention official Wimon Chaiwat.
Even palaces and temples in the old capital are at risk.
Ayutthaya and Chaiyaphum are among six flooded provinces receiving help from His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn.

Many flood-hit residents in Phitsanulok's Muang district are gathering round a bonfire at night to keep warm due to the cool weather.
More rain is forecast in the South.
