A disturbing development

Exiled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's suggestion to his supporters during a phone-in programme at the Rajamangala national stadium on Saturday that only "Royal kindness" - presumably a Royal pardon - can assure his safe return home as a free man is disturbingly inappropriate, to say the least. It is no surprise that the top military brass are unhappy with the remark, seeing it as an attempt to get His Majesty the King involved in politics and unnecessarily putting pressure on him to solve a problem of Thaksin's own making.

Hoping Phra Siam Devathiraja will help us

Thailand's political crisis has deepened following the rally at Bangkok's Rajamangala National Stadium where 70,000 Thaksin loyalists turned up to show their support for the former prime minister. Dressed in red, these supporters denounced the People's Alliance for Democracy's "conspiracy" against Thaksin and warned that a possible coup would be a setback to democracy.
