Rare artistic collaboration

A luxury service provider and an avant garde Bangkok gallery present a unique blend of art forms

AMY WANG

One of Thailand's leading artists, Chatchai Puipia, will put his new work, a 215-centimetre-tall bronze sculpture entitled Dedicated to the Spirits I Love, on show for the first time in two fundraising events organised by 100 Tonson Gallery and Quintessentially (Thailand).

Chatchai Puipia is seen working on his Dedicated to the Spirits I Love bronze sculpture.

The two events, "Dinner with the Pope" and "Music with the Pope", will be held at 100 Tonson Gallery, Soi Tonson, Phloenchit Road. The dinner is on Dec 13 and the classical music concert will follow on Dec 20. Proceeds will go towards the "A Leg-Up Society", a centre for Thai artists in need of financial support to continue their work.

Chatchai Puipia belongs to a generation of Thai artists whose work is a bitter portrayal of the shame of Thailand's capitalist, touristic society, and the collapse of traditional culture. His work has been exhibited in leading art galleries in New York, Tokyo, Paris and elsewhere around the world.

The theme of the Pope has been continually emerging and re-emerging in Chatchai's work over the past 10 years - initially as paintings inspired by the Portrait of Pope Innocent X painted by the great Spanish artist Velazquez in 1650.

Chatchai has made many paintings and small sculptures of the Pope, but few of them have yet been shown. They will all be exhibited alongside Dedicated to the Spirits I Love at this event.

"The collaboration between 100 Tonson Gallery and Quintessentially happened because we value the importance of Thai contemporary art," said Smith Mekaroonkamol, marketing manager of Quintessentially (Thailand).

"This cooperation with a renowned Thai artist like Chatchai is a wonderful opportunity. At the 'Dinner With the Pope', guests will not only be able to see Chatchai's work, which is food for the soul, but will also enjoy a fabulous dinner prepared by guest chef Uwe Opocensky from the Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong."

The "Music With the Pope" evening will be a juxtaposition of paintings and sculptures by Chatchai and music by the Bangkok String Orchestra, led by Archarn Tasana Nagavajara and British conductor Leo Philips. Their performance of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 will be followed by a cocktail party.
