Everybody knows Cinderella, the beautiful girl who wins the heart of Prince Charming. She has appeared in many forms - cartoons, books, movies, television shows and on stage. Now Thai audiences will have a chance to enjoy her story in the form of a Broadway musical.
Produced by the Broadway Asia Entertainment, Cinderella will be staged at Muang Thai Rachadalai Theatre, The Esplanade shopping complex on Ratchadaphisek Road, from Dec 16-21. Showtime is 7:30pm, with a 2pm matinee on weekends.
Created and inspired by one of the most romantic fairytales, Cinderella was brought to life by composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, who made their names creating a large number of popular Broadway musicals, including The King and I and The Sound of Music.
And this time the enchanting story will be told by world-renowned vocalist Lea Salonga. The Filipino singer and actress won an Olivier Award and a Tony Award for her role as Kim on Broadway in the 1991 production of Miss Saigon. In Thailand, she is well known for her Disney roles as Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Mulan in Mulan.
Her vast array of theatre credits also include Les Mise'rables as Eponine, the witch in Into the Woods, Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, plus The Goodbye Girl, They're Playing Our Song, Grease, The Fantastics, Paper Moon, The Bad Seed, The Sound of Music and Annie.
Playing her Prince Charming will be Peter Saide from Australia, who was most recently seen as Tony in Saturday Night Fever and a principal vocalist in Masquerade.
Directed by Bobby Garcia, this all-new version of Cinderella is aimed at the adult audience as well as families, and will feature elaborate sets, costumes and magical effects.
The stunning costumes were created by haute couture fashion designer Renato Balestra, whose clientele includes international jetsetters from around the world. The stage is designed by Tony Awards winner and renowned designer David Gallo.
The two-act Cinderella will not only feature the famous song Ten Minutes Ago, but also introduce other favourites from the catalogue which capture the romance and enchantment that form the cornerstones of this production.
Cinderella is a story with a rich history dating back to the 9th century China. Since then, the timeless, magical tale of the rags-to-riches heroine who wins the love of a prince and escapes her evil stepmother has been adapted all over the globe.
It is probably the best-known fairy tale in the world, having travelled from China to India, Egypt and the West. In fact, more than 500 variations of Cinderella have been recorded in Europe alone.
The story was first told, and then written down, by collectors of folk tales. The modern version is a translation from the French of Charles Perrault that appeared in his influential collection The Tales of Mother Goose.
Tickets for Cinderella cost 1,000, 2,000, 2,500, 3,000, 3,500 and 4,000 baht and can be purchased from Thaiticketmajor booths, Major Cineplex box offices and 52 branches of Thailand Post in Bangkok and its perimeter. For more information, call 02-262-3456 or visit http://www.thaiticketmajor.com.
