Doctors put King on a liquid diet

His Majesty the King began taking fluid meals yesterday, but his fever was still fluctuating, the Royal Household Bureau said in a statement.

The statement, citing the latest medical examination of the King's sore throat, said his temperature was much lower and close to normal in the afternoon, but rose slightly in the evening.

His Majesty was put on a fluid diet by doctors yesterday after being unable to take food and medicines on Thursday because of an infection in his throat.

He was given a saline solution and treated with intravenous antibiotics.

A blood test on Wednesday showed evidence of infection, but found no trace of bacteria in blood and sputum samples, according to the statement.

The King's ailment was revealed on Thursday by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.

They said his throat had become inflamed, with a lot of phlegm, and he had been having difficulty eating since Wednesday.

His Majesty's ailment caused him to cancel a much-awaited speech on Thursday to mark his 81st birthday yesterday.

The Crown Prince and the Princess represented him in receiving a gathering of cabinet ministers, senior officials and members of the public at the Dusitdalai Pavilion inside Chitralada Palace.
