Today consumers have more choices when buying a computer with the new Netbook form factor hitting the market with prices ranging from 10,000 baht to over 30,000 baht.
Asustek Computer (Thailand), which pioneered the sector with the launch of 7in. Eee PC (Easy work, Easy play, Easy learn) last year, has announced a new model, the Eee PC 900, with an 8.9in. screen.
The company's managing director, Pornthep Watchara-amnouy, noted that so far the company had distributed 12,000 Eee PCs, and expected to ship 70,000 units this year.
The Eee PCs cater to a wide range of consumer needs, targetting users who wanted a second computer, as well as students and housewives, he said.
The Eee PC 900 comes in two models - one with a 12GB storage capacity with Microsoft Windows and priced at 17,900 baht, and a 20GB Linux platform which is priced at 16,900 baht.
Pornthep noted that the company expected to ship some 3,000 to 4,000 units a month, and said that after Q2 this year the company would visit schools with the new Eee PC with a Thai language keyboard.
Currently, the Eee PC contributes 10 per cent of total revenues to the company, he said, noting that Asus would manufacture some five million units this year.
Asus is not alone in providing mini-notebook PCs, or Netbooks. HP (Thailand) last week launched the Mini-Note PC 2133 (picture and details on facing page), which the company is aiming at students and businessmen, while several local PC brands including SVOA, Lemel and DTK have introduced Classmate PCs. This is a 7in. Netbook with an Intel Celeron M processor and these are priced from 9,900 baht to 12,900 baht.
