The SET50 Index closed last week at 528.37, a decline by 26.04 index points from the previous week or 4.70%. For SET50 Index Futures, the nearest contract month S50U08 (expiring in September 2008) was settled at 522.3, a decrease of 25.3 index points from the week before. External factors came back to play major role in influencing investor sentiment on the Thai stock market again last week. US stocks fell on fears that the financial sector could face worsening writedowns, and the impact of a slowing US economy. Global oil prices continued to set daily records and were hovering around $146 a barrel for the benchmark New York contract by the end of the week.

Domestically, inflation in June rose to a 10-year high at nearly 9%, increasing the likelihood that the Bank of Thailand will raise its key interest rate at the next meeting of its Monetary Policy Committee on July 16.

The high political temperature also pressured investor sentiment. As a result, foreign investors remained net sellers of Thai shares throughout the week. All these factors led the domestic benchmark SET Index to move down.

Total weekly volume on the TFEX was 25,975 contracts, made up of 25,241 futures contracts, 348 call option contracts and 286 put option contracts. The three most active options series were put options with exercise prices of 520 and 510 index points respectively, followed by call options with an exercise price of 580 points, all expiring in September 2008.
