JOURNALISM AWARDS
PURICH TRIVITAYAKHUN
True Corporation, in conjunction with the Thai Broadcast Journalists Association, announced the winners of the Fourth Sai Fah Noi Awards on Sept 27.
The contest is designed for junior and senior university students who are studying in mass communication. It aims to prepare students for entry into the media industry after their graduation.
TV feature winner
The winning team for television features was the Brave Do team from Dhurakij Pundit University. They won for their Plook Paen Din (Growing Land) submission, which portrays the problem of shoreline erosion in the inner Gulf of Thailand. They were awarded a trophy and a 35,000-baht scholarship.
The team members are Arkkhaphon Mongkonthai, Nattasorn Hirantrakarn, Rathaphon Sontong, Apicha Chansaeng and Chotmanee Thina.
"We presented this angle in a different way from other journalists," said Akkhaphon.
"Other journalists suggested that authorities from outside the community came to solve the erosion problems, but they didn't pay much attention to the proposed solutions that came from the people in the community."
He hoped that this documentary would foster cooperation between outside authorities and the people in the communities in coping with the crisis.
Three consolation awards went to teams from Bangkok University, Chandrakasem Rajabhat University and Maha Sarakham University. They were awarded a trophy and a 15,000-baht scholarship each.
Radio feature winner
The winning team for radio features was the Pirab Khao Cheng Doi team from Chiang Mai University. They won for their Paw Mae Liang Diow Garn Plian Plaeng Kong Krob Krua Thai (Single Parent: A Change in Thai Families) effort, which tells the story of how single parents raise their children.
The team members are Thanakorn Thanomnantakul, Prassanee Nampang, Wanalee Puttawat and Supattra Surintaramon. They were awarded a trophy and a 25,000-baht scholarship.
"Most of our team members' families are single-parent families. We want to tell our audiences that single parents can rear their children the same way as other [two-parent families] in society," Prassanee explained her inspiration for her story.
"Initially, I didn't have a good opinion of the making of documentaries. I thought it was tough, and that it was hard to get information for the plot and the script," said Prassanee. "Now, I want to work in this field more than before as it is very challenging and mentally rewarding."
Three consolation awards went to teams from Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University and Bangkok University. They were awarded a trophy and a 10,000-baht scholarship each.
'Sai Fah Noi' awards
The competition is divided into two categories - radio news features and television news features. Each team has to write a three-to-five-minute documentary and then produce it.
The judging criteria are quality, value, performance, and adherence to a code of ethics.
"All the stories submitted showed improvement in development, as well as outstanding production skills, compared to previous years," said Thepchai Yong, who is the acting managing director of the Thai Broadcasting System and a former president of the Thai Broadcast Journalists Association.
He added, "This proves that the 'new blood' - future Thai journalists - understand and appreciate the problems in their communities, as they are able to present the problems through their own perspective and apply the communication techniques they learned for producing quality radio and television news stories."
This year, 97 stories were submitted by students from universities all over Thailand. The number is comprised of 34 radio news features and 63 television news features.
The numbers are more than those of the previous year, which saw 14 radio news features and 43 television news features.
"Professional media practitioners are very important, since they are providers to society ... they provide information. Our eyes and ears are wider because of them," said Saovanee Limmanont, executive assistant to the president and head of corporate communications and marketing public relations at True Corp.
"By sponsoring this kind of event, I believe that in the future we will have a new line of media practitioners who will come up with innovative techniques, and who seek and present ideas that can be archetypical for generations after them."
