Traditional rocket festival

THANIN WEERADET

The annual Yasothon Bun Bang Fai Rocket Festival is scheduled May 9-11 when farmers fire rockets appealing the gods and holy spirits for timely rain and bountiful harvest. Here is the schedule:

May 9: Exhibition of Bung Fai rockets and sale of OTOP products starting from Chaeng Sanit Road in front of the Yasothon provincial centre pavilion to the municipal court, and Soeng Bang Fai folk dance.

May 10: A parade of Bun Bang Fai Trophy starting 7am from the Yasothon municipal office to the launch area in front of the provincial office on Chaeng Sanit Road, followed by the opening ceremony at 9am to be broadcast live on Channel 11.

At 7:15pm there will be the palaeng Isan-style set dinner together with cultural presentations, as well as Thai-Japanese cultural shows, featuring a troupe from Shishibu prefecture in Japan. The evening ends with a contest of traditional Thai fireworks.

May 11: Bang Fai Rocket Contest runs from 8am until 4pm. The prize presentation will take place on the same day at 4pm.

Great Emirates deals

Emirates Airline is launching a promotion that offers great airfares to some key destinations around the world.

The special fares include 6,500 baht for a Bangkok-Hong Kong round-trip in the economy class; 21,000 baht for a Bangkok-Dubai round-trip; and 23,000 baht for a Bangkok-Sydney-Auckland round-trip.

Round-trip tickets to Europe, Africa, Middle East and countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council start from 27,500 baht, 27,500 baht, 23,000 baht and 22,000 baht respectively.

Durian festival in progress

The Amazing Thailand Durian Festival currently in progress in Chanthaburi Province runs until May 11. Visitors can walk from King Taksin Park to the provincial stadium and enjoy items showcased at the fair. There are decorations of fruit trays, fruit contests, contest of oversized fruit, a walking street, cooking contests and an exhibition on Chanthaburi. United Airlines promotion

The United Airlines has announced special packages that offer travellers a chance to choose from over 200 cities in North America. The price of one ticket covers up to three cities of choice, allowing two en-route stopover points, including Japan, in addition to the final destination.

For flights originating in Bangkok, the prices start from 36,215 baht for cities on the West Coast to 41,310 baht for East Coast cities if travelling Monday through Thursday during low season. Taxes and fuel surcharge are additional. Weekend travel (Friday-Sunday) and/or side trip to Canada and Mexico are also available for a nominal surcharge. Other terms and conditions apply.
