LIVING YOUNG

The youth hormone

How do you know whether you are getting old or not? From your snooping neighbours or from your colleagues?

DR KRISADA SIRAMPUJ

Ageing is no longer a matter of numbers since breakthrough anti-ageing medicine drugs have emerged.

In the ice age, we could survive while others creatures could not. Even the toughest hothead like saber-tooth tiger (Smilodon) or mammoth are extinct. Did our ancestors have preferential features that were blessed by god. The answer is yes and no.

The secret that makes humans survive through thick and thin is because of our organ call adrenal glands, which are the triangular shape tissue locate over both kidneys. These twin gland will secrete cortisol hormone.

We don't live in such a harsh environment like 10,000 years ago, but the glands still secrete cortisol regularly. This causes our body to age.

The cortisol was also named an "ageing hormone". The conditions today that can trigger cortisol is economic hardship, lack of sleep, stress at work, strenuous exertion, family problems, depression or in short physical mental stress.

However, the ageing isn't caused by any one single factor. Other hormones also play important roles. One that is important is growth hormone, the hormone that secretes highest during puberty till early adolescence (from the ages of 15 to 25).

This hormone is the real fountain of youth, it can reverse ageing significantly. There is a supporting article published in the New England Journal of Medicine (Rudman, D, N Engl J Med 1999;340(16):1300.). Its mechanism including muscle enhancement, decreasing wrinkle, stronger immune, brighter memory, clearer mind, well-being feeling and many more of vital body function improvement. Because of these amazing effects this hormone has earned its name as "youth hormone" without difficulty.

If most of these issues seems to be quite an abstract thought for someone, let's try this example. Each year when you go to visit your alma mater, you might notice that your friends, though at the same age, look so different. Some look younger, some look much older and some look unchanged.

Fortunately, in the 21st century we have the cutting-edge medicine called anti-ageing or longevity medicine, which emphasizes on prevention than cure and holistic treatment.

However, Thailand does not have many anti-ageing specialists . The Thailand Centre for Excellence Life Science or TCELS realised this problem and established the International Anti-Ageing Medicine Institute (IAAMI) for the purpose of education and to propagate standard anti-ageing protocol to all the practicing physician in Thailand.

Dr Krisda Sirampuj is director of the International Anti-Ageing Medicine Institute and a lecturer at Chulalongkorn University's PhD programme. He is also a columnist and a prolific author of anti-ageing books.
