Students urged not to bet on football

By Sirikul Bunnag

The month-long Euro 2008 tournament has drawn a yellow card from the Education Ministry, which is concerned students will shift their attention from books to betting. The ministry has mapped out measures to prevent students illegally gambling on football matches with the internet as its main target.

The Interior Ministry as well as the Information, Communication and Technology Ministry have been asked to cooperate by keeping a close watch on online gambling, particularly by young people, as betting on soccer via the internet is expected to be rampant during the tournament, which kicked off last night and finishes on June 29.

The Education Ministry is asking for cooperation from parents and relatives by paying more attention to their children, including their use of phones and the internet, in a bid to prevent them from gambling on football matches, said permanent secretary for education Jaruayporn Thoranin.

One tip offered by Mrs Jaruayporn was for parents to stay close to their children while watching football matches and deter them from going out to watch the games with friends.

The use of the internet in schools will be closely monitored by teachers and school executives, she added.

Students who get into debt from gambling should call the ministry's hotline 1579 for advice, she said
