Mr Apirak (left) and M.R. Disnadda Diskul, the TCEB chairman, announce the new campaign yesterday. |
A global campaign is under way to promote Bangkok as the Exhibition City for Asean. The campaign aims to boost Bangkok's competitiveness in the meeting, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (Mice) industry.
The Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with the (BMA) to launch the campaign.
Nattawut Amornvivat, the president of the TCEB, said the agency and BMA had jointly organised events in the past and that this agreement would cement their relationship. The TCEB set budget of 100 million baht for this project, which runs until 2010.
The BMA would provide transport facilities, billboards and exhibition venues and join overseas road shows with the TCEB.
Mr Nattawut said he was confident that the agreement with BMA would increase the competitiveness of the TCEB when bidding for events to be held in Bangkok.
BMA governor Apirak Kosayodhin said the Mice business would help drive the country's economy, especially in Bangkok. Apart from generating jobs and increasing income for the country, the Mice industry would also accelerate technology transfer.
The TCEB expects 947,600 business visitors to the country, generating around 65 billion baht in revenue, or 20% year-on-year growth compared with 2007 which saw around 55 billion baht.
M.R. Disnadda Diskul, the TCEB chairman, said Thailand had strong potential to increase its Mice industry because of its prime location, its good utilities and abundant facilities such as hotels and exhibition halls.
He added that the government should improve infrastructure including transport routes between Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang Airport.
At the end of this month, the TCEB will invite Mice media members from Asian countries to promote Thailand's Mice industry.
Bangkok will host ITU Telecom Asia 2008 in September with 30,000 participants, and Asia's largest industrial-machinery trade show, Metalex in November.
