Demands ransom from former wife

A man was arrested yesterday for kidnapping his three-year-old daughter and demanding a ransom of 100,000 baht from his former wife.
Police from the Crime against Children, Juveniles and Women Suppression Division arrested the 52-year-old man in Loei's Na Duang district yesterday.
The man, who lives in Ubon Ratchathani's Kut Khaopun district, faces three charges _ abducting a person under 15 years of age for ransom, trying to extort money, and telling lies to police investigators.
Pol Col Worapong Thongpaiboon, chief of the division's 10th operation unit, said the man and his 43-year-old ex-wife complained to police on July 1 that their three-year-old daughter had been abducted.
The girl was living with her mother in Ubon Ratchathani before the abduction.
The man told police that on June 27 he picked up the girl after school in the province and took her to spend the weekend with him in Nonthaburi, where he was employed as a construction worker.
On June 30, the man's ex-wife came to Nonthaburi to take the girl back to Ubon, only to be told by her former husband that the girl had been kidnapped.
They told police they suspected a woman called Kai, a girlfriend of the ex-husband, might be linked to the abduction.
Police later called the accused in for questioning. She denied any involvement and told police that the man could have staged the kidnapping to deceive his ex-wife.
Pol Col Worapong said the man phoned his ex-wife on July 3, telling her the child's abductor had called and told them to pick up their daughter at Phutthamonthon Sai 4 road.
When the girl's mother went there, she could not contact her ex-husband.
After a while her former husband called her again, saying he was also taken hostage along with their daughter.He told her to bring a ransom of 100,000 baht to pay the abductor in return for their release or they could be harmed, according to police.
The girl's mother then returned to Ubon to ask for a loan to pay the ransom.
However, police found the man behaving suspiciously and began to trace his whereabouts and finally found him with his daughter in Loei province.
Police said the man admitted to setting the whole thing up to trick his ex-wife into paying him the money.
He said he previously tried to borrow 50,000 baht from her, but she refused.
He wanted the money to pay his debts, he said.
