Most schools in Raman area reopen

MUHAMMAD AYUB PATHAN & ABDULLOH BENJAKAT

YALA : Most schools in Raman district reopened yesterday after a two-day closure last week following the fatal shooting of a school principal on Wednesday.

Attasit Rattanakaew, Yala's zone 1 education director, said 44 schools had already reopened and the other 11 would reopen tomorrow if there are no safety concerns.

The closure of all the 55 schools in the district was prompted by the killing of Weera Muenchan, the principal of Ban Mahae school, on Wednesday by rebels.

He was slain by a motorcycle pillion rider while was on his way home.

Elsewhere in Yala, five rebel suspects were taken by police to re-enact their crimes in Yaha district yesterday.

The five are Muhammad-hazanai Baso, 16, Mayakee Baso, 30, Waehama Baso, 26, Dehma Manahim, 20, and Abdulloh Japakeeya, 16. They allegedly confessed to having played a role in planning the June 27 bombing of a teacher escort team.

But investigators have only linked Mr Waehama to the insurgent movement.

In Pattani, two rangers were killed and three students wounded when a pick-up truck was ambushed with a bomb explosion and then attacked by gunmen in Nong Chik district yesterday afternoon.

Police said the pick-up was carrying three rangers and providing protection to the three wounded female students.

After the blast, gunmen in hiding shot dead the two rangers on the pick-up before making off with their two assault rifles without killing the girls, police said.
