New wings for prisons

The National Justice Administration Development Committee has approved a proposal to build special facilities to accommodate inmates who are mentally ill or pregnant, and inmates' children born in prison.

According to Justice Minister Sompong Amornwiwat, these facilities will be located inside correctional institutes.

He said the Corrections Department had been instructed to find out the number of inmates belonging to those categories and estimate how many facilities should be built to accommodate them.

Mr Sompong said the committee, chaired by Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej, has agreed to grant 10 million baht to build each facility.

He added that the committee also approved a plan to increase out-of-court settlements. This is aimed at reducing the number of court cases following reports they have increased by 10%.

Citing a joint survey by the Justice Ministry and the National Statistics Office, Mr Sompong said the number of cases awaiting court proceedings accounted for only one-third of all crimes.
