The SET50 Index closed last week at 453.18, a decrease by 32.07 index points or 6.61% from the previous week. For SET50 Index Futures, the nearest contract month S50U08 (expiring in September 2008), was settled at 447.6, a decrease by 34.3 index points from the previous week. Political tensions escalated after the declaration last Tuesday of a state of emergency in the Bangkok area by Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej following a clash the previous night between People's Alliance for Democracy supporters and a pro-government group.

The uncertain political situation caused investors, especially foreigners, to sell off their positions heavily throughout the week, with a net sale position of 2.19 billion baht on Friday alone. The result was a plunge in the SET index which lost more than 6%.

Looking at external factors, oil prices continued their correction as Nymex crude futures fell to below $110 per barrel, closing on Friday at $106.23, the lowest level in five months.

Total weekly volume on the TFEX was 34,691 contracts, made up of 34,118 futures contracts, 269 call option contracts and 304 put option contracts.

The three most active options series were put options with an exercise price of 470 index points followed by call options with an exercise price of 470 and put options with an exercise price of 460 index points, respectively, all expiring in September 2008.
