MILK HAZARD

Melamine found in new powder shipments

POST REPORTERS

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found melamine in 100 tonnes of powdered milk shipped from China by dairy product manufacturer Dairy Plus Co.

The company is a subsidiary of Dutch Mill Co, which recently had a shipment of 22 tonnes of milk powder seized after it tested positive for melamine, a substance considered a lethal health hazard.

FDA secretary-general Pipat Yingseree said a Medical Sciences Department lab test showed the milk shipment, manufactured by Beijing Shuangwa Daily Co Ltd, contains 1.10 to 1.32 ppm/kg of melamine. The shipment arrived in Samut Prakan on Sept 20.

Melamine, when added to watered-down milk, makes it appear to be richer in protein than it is.

According to FDA regulations, the level of melamine contamination in milk powder and drinking milk products must not exceed 1mg/kg.

Dr Pipat said the agency would instruct the importer to destroy the melamine-tainted product or send it back to the manufacturer in China.

The FDA chief allayed consumers' fears over tainted dairy products in the local market, saying the agency had thoroughly checked the products to ensure they are safe for consumers.

"We can say that all of the milk products sold in local markets are melamine-free," Dr Pipat said.

He urged consumers who have queries about melamine or are suspicious of a product to contact officials via FDA's hotline 1556 or http://www.fda.moph.go.th.

Over a hundred milk products and products with milk ingredients have been tested by the FDA so far.

The Chinese powdered milk samples collected from Dutch Mill Co and Dairy Plus Co are the only three to test positive for melamine.

Dutch Mill's corporate adviser Kematat Kraivixien said the company had acknowledged the FDA's finding and would return the 100-tonne shipment to the Chinese manufacturer.
