Sutha resigns from cabinet

ANCHALEE KONGRUT & PRADIT RUANGDIT

Sutha: Has suffered from poor health
Sutha Chansaeng resigned as social development and human security minister yesterday, in a move that may lead to a cabinet reshuffle. Mr Sutha, of the ruling People Power party (PPP), has suffered from poor health. He tendered his resignation letter yesterday.

The letter was delivered by his assistant to Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej. The resignation took immediate effect.

Mr Sutha returned to hospital in Bangkok this week and doctors said they had detected an abnormality in his brain tissue. Medical records show he had a history of seizures when he was young.

PPP secretary-general Surapong Suebwonglee said yesterday that leaders of party factions would meet next week to discuss a cabinet reshuffle prompted by Mr Sutha's resignation.

Soon after taking office three months ago, Mr Sutha was confronted with allegations that he bought a bachelor's degree from a college in the Philippines.

He was also accused by the opposition Democrat party of concealing his wealth.

The minister allegedly used a bank account of his child born out of wedlock to hide his fortune.

The cabinet yesterday appointed Culture Minister Anusorn Wongwan and PM's Office Minister Jakrapob Penkair to help oversee the Social Development Ministry until a replacement for Mr Sutha can be found.

A source at the ministry said the replacement could be fellow PPP MP Vicharn Meenchaianant.

It is known that Mr Vicharn and Mr Sutha are affiliated to the Bangkok faction of the PPP which is allegedly under the influence of a prominent politician who is among the 111 former executives of the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai party.
