Surat: Accomplished |
Surat Osathanugrah, chairman of the Osotspa group, the country's largest consumer product conglomerate, died of sepsis yesterday. He was 78. Mr Surat was born on May 11, 1930. He obtained a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Colorado.
One of the country's leading businessman, Surat was the third-generation leader of Osotspa, the consumer products giant founded by his grandfather Pae. Under his stewardship, Osotspa diversified into a wide range of products, from foodstuffs to energy drinks to consumer goods. His political activities spanned nearly three decades.
He took positions with the Democrat, Chart Pattana and Social Action parties and served as commerce minister in 1969 and 1985 and deputy interior minister in 1983.
Surat founded Bangkok University in 1962. An avid photographer, Surat was also president of the Royal Photographic Society of Thailand. He was one of 55 photographers whose work was featured in the book Thailand: 9 Days in the Kingdom, published last December to commemorate His Majesty the King's 80th birthday. Funeral rites are being held nightly for seven days at Wat That Thong's Sala Chao Chom in Bangkok
