Local one-ton pickup truck sales fell to the lowest level of the year last month as record-breaking diesel prices hurt consumer sentiment. According to preliminary figures compiled by Toyota Motor Thailand, pickup truck sales in June dropped 23.2% to 25,268 units from 32,904 last year, and were also down 3,865 units from May.
Monthly sales climbed from January, when 26,260 pickups were sold, to 39,144 in March, before easing back to 34,304 in April and 29,133 in May.
Runaway diesel prices that have approached 45 baht a litre deterred consumers, many of whom decided not to buy pickups or switched to cars running on less costly gasohol.
Sales of all Japanese and American pickup truck brands dropped across the board in June when compared with the same month last year.
Toyota, the best selling brand, sold 11,589 units, down from 15,643 in June last year. Isuzu sales fell to 9,669 units from 10,096 and Mitsubishi to 1,333 units from 2,021.
Pickup truck sales including passenger pickup vehicles (PPV) in the first six months dropped 0.73% year-on-year to 181,891 units.
Toyota said it still led all segments of the pickup market from January to June. The country's largest automaker sold 74,569 units followed by Isuzu with 67,445 and Nissan with 13,856 units.
Mitsubishi sold 11,908 units, Chevrolet 5,379, Mazda 4,422 and Ford 4,270 units. The newcomer Tata from India sold only 42 units during May and June.
In the pure pickup truck market excluding PPVs, Toyota sold 67,355 units while Isuzu sold 63,644 and Nissan 13,856.
In the PPV market, the Toyota Fortuner had six-month sales of 7,214 units, the Isuzu MU7 recorded 3,801 and the Ford Everest 323 units.
