Boots spending B100m to add stores

PITSINEE JITPLEECHEEP

Boots Retail (Thailand) Co says that it will spend 100 million baht to increase the number of its health and beauty stores in Thailand from 143 to 160 by mid-next year. Managing director Ian Hunter said the expansion was in line with the company's vision to be the best and biggest pharmacy in Thailand.

''We have set out our expansion plan in Thailand for the next two to three years and are now close to the target,'' he said yesterday.''However, our expansion will depend on the locations we find and how well the Thai economy performs.''

Mr Hunter expects business would be tough in September or October due to the current economic and political difficulties. However, the company still expects to see strong double-digit sales growth this year.

The market for health-care products in Thailand is expected to expand more because rising stress and exposure to pollution have led consumers to emphasise protecting their health, he said.

Mr Hunter said that the overall demand for health and beauty products in Thailand was expected to grow by 8-10% this year, and pharmaceuticals by 19%.

He said Boots had a 3% share in the local health and beauty retail market, excluding pharmacy sales.

Yesterday, the company re-launched its brand loyalty programme called Boots Health Club, to encourage the Thai consumers to pursue healthier lifestyles.

The programme has been created in partnership with local hospitals, fitness centres and insurance companies, including Bangkok Hospital Medical Center, Samitivej Hospital, BNH Hospital, Ayudhya Allianz CP and Fitness First, and provides members with numerous benefits and discounts.
