BANGKOK OASIS TOUR

The Quiet Bangkok Group is organising another walking trip around some of the memorable nooks and crannies of the capital. This Saturday, they have invited Chulapassorn Panomvan na Ayudhya, co-founder and chairperson of the Siam Thasana Group, to give a guided tour of the Bang Lamphu and Samsen areas, both of which boast a rich history and cultural heritage.

The one-day programme will start at 8am at Wat Chana Songkhram, renowned for its distinct architecture by the Wang Na school of artists. Then it will pass through the backpackers' haven of Khao San Road and enjoy the peaceful morning atmosphere in the usually noisy setting. The street is lined with several interesting architectural buildings that reflect how different ethnic and religious groups can co-exist in harmony.

The morning session will end at Wat Bowon Niwet, with its marvellous murals by Krua In Khong. Chulapassorn will also highlight the historical significance of the temple during the reigns of King Rama III, IV and V.

The afternoon programme will start again at about 2pm at the main hall of Wat Thewaratkunchorn (next to the National Library). Participants will then walk down Samsen Road and learn about political intrigues in the royal court of King Rama V. The last stop will be Wat Rachathiwat Wihan, with its unique ubosot designed by Prince Naris, and inimitable Western-style murals of the Vessantara Jataka, which depict the last incarnation of Lord Buddha prior to his attaining enlightenment. Finally, enjoy the lovely sight of the Chao Phraya River at sunset.

This is the fifth of the Quiet Bangkok Group's series of Bangkok oasis tours, which are part of their on-going campaign to raise awareness of noise pollution. Registration fee is 100 baht per person. Please note that the guided tour will be in Thai, but some of the organisers and participants may be able to speak in English.
