The People Power party is eyeing a couple of political parties as its potential new home in case the party is dissolved, said PPP registration officer Samarn Lertwongrat yesterday.
He said he has already run checks on the parties in question and found that they have been properly registered. What he will do next is to expand party branches and membership as required by the election law to make sure that PPP members have a new home, said Mr Samarn.
However, Mr Samarn refused to give the names of the ''spare-part'' political parties, saying he feared the move would be blocked.
He said PPP leader Samak Sundaravej has reiterated the need to look for a new home as quickly as possible.
''The PPP cannot sit idly by even though it should take over five to six months before a verdict comes out. We're looking at two to three parties,'' he said.
Mr Samarn was referring to the looming party dissolution case against the PPP after its former deputy leader Yongyuth Tiyapairat was found guilty by the Supreme Court of electoral fraud in the Dec 23 polls.
According to Mr Samarn, the Election Commission's decision not to extend the deadline for Mr Samak and PPP secretary-general Surapong Suebwonglee to testify in the party dissolution case has been interpreted as a warning sign.
Mr Samak and Mr Surapong sought to have the deadline extended to Aug 27, but the EC gave them until Aug 13 to give their statements.
