Rungthiwa closes in on Chinese leader

QINGDAO, CHINA : Thailand's Rungthiwa Pangjan fired an even-par 72 yesterday to sit three shots behind leader Yang Taoli of China in the opening round of the US$50,000 Orient Masters Qingdao. Tiranan Yoopan hit a 75 and Narisara Kerdrit carded a 76 in the third leg of the four-tournament Orient Masters Tour.

Rungthiwa, who has won three times in Thailand this year, credited her driving and solid iron play for her even-par round. She finished fourth in Qingdao last year and is looking for a top three place this week.

''Today the weather helped because there was no wind and it was cool. My goal is to finish in the top three. Winning is good but for me a top three finish is also good,'' said the 29-year-old from Bangkok.
