Bangkok Airways has cut fuel surcharges on its domestic and international flights by 11-16%, effective yesterday, in line with the drop in fuel prices and the precedent set by Thai Airways International.
The charge for international flights between Thailand and Cambodia, Laos, Burma and Vietnam has dropped to US$40 from $45, while that on domestic services is down to $25 (around 800 baht) from $30.
Similarly, Bangkok Airways' sister airline Siem Reap Airways International is also reducing its fuel surcharge today on its international flights between Cambodia and Thailand, Laos and Vietnam to $40 from $45.
Earlier this month, THAI began to cut fuel surcharges by up to 30% for tickets issued from Oct 1, resulting in charges on international flights ranging from $41 to $266.
The surcharge on most of THAI's domestic flights dropped to 750 baht ($22) from 850 baht per leg - except for the route between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son, which has a 600-baht levy.
Airlines have been criticised for being slow to cut fuel surcharges and for not reflecting the full reduction in jet fuel prices. Jet fuel prices have fallen 21% over the last two months, with the Singapore spot price of jet fuel on Wednesday down to $99.72 a barrel.
Carriers expect the cut in fuel surcharges to stimulate passenger demand by reducing the cost of travel.
Meanwhile, Bangkok Airways is preparing to boost the frequency of its Bangkok-Chiang Mai, Bangkok-Phuket and Phuket-Samui routes to three flights daily from Oct 26, at the start of its winter season traffic plan.
The carrier currently offers 12 to 14 flights a week on each of the three routes.
