Car parks at Muang Thong Thani condominiums, Sanam Luang 2 and Sears department store top the 70 areas most prone to car theft, according to police traffic radio station FM91.
The parking areas for flats in Muang Thong Thani were the most frequently targeted residential buildings. Sanam Luang 2 in Thawi Watthana district was the riskiest marketplace parking area and Sears in Rangsit district, Pathum Thani, led the department store category.
Other areas frequently targeted by car thieves were apartments in Soi Lat Phrao 112 and nearby areas, Rom Klao and Klong Chan housing estates, the Cholaprathan market in Nonthaburi, Fashion Island department store and Future Park Mall, the radio station reported yesterday.
"Vehicles have been stolen from areas where the owners believed they were safe," it said.
Isuzu and Toyota were the thieves' favourites, according to a survey of 627 vehicles listeners reported stolen in Bangkok and surrounding provinces between March 1 and Nov 30 - 411 pick-up trucks, 200 sedans and 16 vans.
Isuzu topped the list of stolen pick-up trucks with 168 vehicles, followed by Toyota (115), and Nissan and Mitsubishi (55 each).
Toyota were the most popular passenger cars for thieves with 86 stolen, followed by Honda (63) and Nissan (17).
The 16 stolen vans included three Toyotas and one each from Isuzu, Mercedes-Benz and Nissan.
